In the early 1850s, escaped slave and runaway Samuel Denson came to Cumberland from Mississippi via the Underground Railroad. The magic goal was the Mason-Dixon Line. Many of  houses and barns along Mason Road and Evitt’s Creek Valley hid  the runaways. Denson stayed here and helped runaways to freedom, passing only a short distance from where you are today.
